Express Yourself

A 3D speed platformer where you have to escape a laboratory while playing as a box! When you take damage, another box shoots out of the one you were playing as and you start playing as that new, smaller box! Make sure not to take damage when you're too small, or else you'll have no more boxes and it'll be game over! Complete platforming, quick thinking, and physics based challenges as you try to beat levels as fast as you can. Complete 10 levels split into 3 zones with platforming with progressively increasing difficulty, carefully traverse obstacles, and use power-ups to gain special abilities that can help you. Can you make it out of the lab alive?

In-game Content:

3 zones with 3 levels each, and 4 in the 3rd zone (totals to 10 levels).

4 power-ups each with their own unique abilities.

Timer and rank system so you can try to beat levels as fast as possible.

Save system to store your level progress and times (level times aren't saved in the browser version).

And more!

Controls:

-Space to jump (Holding = higher jump)

-Q to use ability and skip cutscenes

-R to restart from last checkpoint

-P/Escape to Pause

-Scroll wheel to move the camera

This is an entry to the Bad Ideas Game Jam. The theme is Outside the Box, and this applies to said theme since you play as a box, you jump out of a box when you take damage, and since the goal is escape a laboratory consisting mostly of cube objects and terrain. Since this is a jam entry, the game doesn't live up to its full potential since many things were cut far before the final release due to time restraints. The game may receive a remaster with more levels and bosses along with many fixes depending on what happens after March.

Install instructions

For Windows:

Download the Windows .zip file, extract it, and open the .exe file to play the game. All data is saved properly with no issues in this version, and is the intended/recommended way to play the game.

For Web Browser:

Press the Run/Play button on this site's page, wait for the game to load, and after it loads you can play the game. Note that saving and loading might not work as expected, level times aren't saved, and that the camera tends to function strangely for the first level in this build.

I have discovered that 3-4 is actually insanely precise due to a last minute change I made not expecting it to make things much harder. You have to play basically perfectly to beat 3-4, which is a good thing and a bad thing (there's no rankings for 3-4 and also it's supposed to be a difficult final level but it also is annoyingly difficult).

Warning to anyone who makes it to zone 3!

If you're wondering, the last minute change was making the lava start two blocks higher. I'm sorry.

Holy peak. I really liked how the character felt, and the platforming never became stale or repetitive. The main mechanic stays fresh throughout the whole game and is explored thoroughly. The only complaint I'd have would be the camera, it could get a little hard to see at times. That and I got confused near the ending, but idk if I'm just dumb. Also the voice logs were great, loved the advertisement typa dude.

Thanks for the feedback, we're glad you enjoyed the game! We tried our best to make each level as unique as possible so it's good you don't think it got stale.

The camera can sometimes glitch out in web builds and also if the camera gets too close to a wall it is pushed away from it, likely having to do with that issue. And yes, the levels do get a lot harder near the end. 2-2 and 3-1 seem to be the most confusing to people who haven't played them before.
